It's
rare that a city has the luxury of totally replacing an existing
SCADA system with one utilizing newer technologies. More commonly,
the newer technology must be blended with the old without losing
functionality or interactivity. That's exactly the situation the
city of Rome, Georgia faced.
Their
existing SCADA system was originally installed using Motorola INTRAC
RTUs. Although they remained fully functional, additional INTRAC
units were being phased out; yet the system needed to be expanded.
Revere
Control Systems was selected to design and install the expansion,
and to integrate it with the existing elements of the system. Our
engineers examined the requirements and determined that the existing
RTUs could be integrated with the Motorola MOSCAD units, an
intelligent RTU. These units can be programmed to virtually any
reporting function required.
Linking
the INTRAC and the MOSCAD units required both units to pass through
a Central Terminal Unit (CTU) consisting of two Motorola Series
300 CPUs. Radio signals from both types of RTUs are received and
transmitted via modems (MIRI for the INTRAC and DPSK for the MOSCAD)
through a citywide trunking system. Using MODBUS protocol, information
from the RTUs is fed to the CTU, which utilizes FIX DMACS software
to integrate the information and interpret data into graphs or alarms.
The
design implementation not only allowed the City to keep the value
of its investment in the INTRAC units, but also provided them a
newer technology platform on which they could base ongoing system
growth. Since the original expansion was put in place, Revere has
been called upon numerous times to put in additional RTUs to support
the system' growth.
